Acupuncture and the Genitourinary System: Anti-Inflammatory Effects and Clinical Potential
Based on: Anti-inflammatory and Immunoregulatory Effects of Acupuncture (PMC8710088)
The urinary and reproductive systems originate from the same embryological tissues. Because of this shared developmental origin, they are closely interconnected in both structure and function, and diseases of one system frequently affect the other.
Recent clinical studies show that acupuncture has therapeutic benefits for a wide range of urinary tract inflammatory conditions, including:
- Upper urinary tract inflammation (e.g., pyelonephritis, ureter inflammation)
- Lower urinary tract inflammation (e.g., cystitis, urethritis)
- Urinary irritation symptoms — frequency, urgency, dysuria, hematuria
- Systemic inflammatory symptoms — fever, chills, fatigue
Acupuncture also shows positive effects in treating reproductive system inflammation, including vaginitis, cervicitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, salpingitis, peritonitis, and inflammation of pelvic connective tissues.
1. Electroacupuncture for Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
According to the cited research (Table S1), electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment at SP6 and CV4 significantly reduces multiple inflammatory and hormonal markers in OHSS models:
- Lower IL-6, TNF-α, MCP-1, and VEGF
- Reduce serum progesterone and testosterone
- Decrease ovarian weight and vascular permeability
- Prevent further disease progression
Proteomic analysis further suggests that EA may exert anti-inflammatory effects through up-regulation of CD200, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokine release within the ovary.
2. Acupuncture at HT7 and Maternal-Separation–Induced Depression
Stimulation of HT7 (Shenmen) has been shown to:
- Relieve depressive-like behavior (reduced immobility time)
- Lower plasma corticosterone
- Reduce IL-1β and IL-6
- Decrease glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor
These findings indicate that acupuncture may help modulate stress-induced changes in the central nervous system and hormone regulation. However, the exact cell types involved and the detailed molecular mechanisms remain unclear and require further study.
3. Research Gaps: Urinary Tract Inflammation
Although acupuncture has demonstrated therapeutic potential for urinary tract inflammatory diseases, current mechanistic research is still limited. More studies are needed to clarify the pathways involved in immune regulation, cytokine signaling, and genitourinary tissue repair.

Anti-inflammatory and Immunoregulatory Effects of Acupuncture(PMC8710088)
