CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

In traditional medicine, this disorder falls within the domain of ‘blockage’ or ‘obstruction’. It is attributed to Cold, Dampness or Wind penetrating the muscles and sinews of the wrist, obstructing the circulation of Qi and Blood, and causing the Blood to coagulate.

Treatment is directed toward clearing the obstruction from the channels and activating the Blood.

Needling

Principal points: PC-7 (大陵 Daling), M-UE-50 (Shangbaxie)
Supplementary points: PC-6 (內關 Neiguan) or TB-5 (外關 Waiguan)

Method: PC-7 (大陵 Daling) is the most important point

Direct the needle into the carpal tunnel and use strong stimulation.

Do not retain needle. If necessary, add the other points to strengthen the stimulation.

Cutaneous Acupuncture

Tap along a band approximately 2 cm. in width, which encircles the affected wrist at 2 finger widths above the transverse crease. Tap until there is local congestion of blood.
